Job Title:

Safety Officer – Chemical – Environmental Health & Safety


Job Summary:

Oversees and manages a comprehensive chemical safety and chemical and hazardous waste management program, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Designs, develops, and provides formal and informal education and training.


Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field and two (2) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education/experience

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:  Valid Driver’s License required. Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Certification within one (1) year of employment.
DOT certification for shipping hazardous goods within one (1) year of employment.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of chemistry or chemical engineering. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, safety codes, dot codes, chemical safety, and general safety protocols. Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and procedures governing the use, storage, disposal, and transportation of chemical and potentially infectious waste materials. Skill in writing concise technical reports. Skill in handling hazardous and unstable chemicals. Skill in interacting diplomatically with persons of various educational, social, and cultural backgrounds. Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships. Ability to develop, implement, and enforce chemical safety programs and protocols. Ability to work in/around potentially hazardous biological or chemical conditions and to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to react calmly in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, evaluates, coordinates, and implements chemistry waste management and education programs to control and eliminate chemical hazards.
  • Serves as the primary hazardous materials response officer. Ensures the proper storage, use, waste minimization, neutralization, detoxification, analysis, transport, and disposal of chemical products and hazardous waste.
  • Develops chemical emergency response procedures for accidental spills, personal contamination, and investigation of laboratory accidents.
  • Investigates chemical accidents; develops and recommends the implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Conducts safety and compliance surveys and inspects workplace environments, equipment, and practices to assure compliance with applicable regulations and guideline governing the use, handling, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste and to ensure the safety of employees, students, and the public. Informs management of areas not in compliance.
  • Recommends and implements measures to help protect employees from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials. Prepares, submits, and maintains applicable reports and files.
  • Stays abreast of new EHS government regulations as they are promulgated, as well as new developments in industry (best practice).
  • Advises senior management on actions necessary to comply with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, frequent driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
